i'm steve prosinski, editor of the gazette. many thanks to the chancellor, director of university relations, and many others, for providing a perfect venue for this exchange of opinions and ideasbetween denny rehberg and senator john tester a democrat. three veteran montana voters -- reporters will ask questions. montana public broadcasting and c-span are broadcasting tonight's debate. yellowstone public radio are broadcasting our forum also and the gazette is streaming it live on gazette.com. our timekeeper is a 20-year-old senior from billings, majoring in accounting. he also is a student body vice president. each candidate will have one minute to answer a question, then the other candidate we have one minute to respond. a 32nd rebuttal -- 30 second rebuttal will be allowed. each candidate will have two minutes for a closing statement. before we go to the questions, we all ask you hold your applause until off the closing comments. interruptions will eat into the time for the candidates and their responses. we're all here to l

it turns out that i think what steve meant was he had some interesting ideas. i did not hear anything from them for many, many weeks. the candidate was on tv one night or one day, but i was watching it that evening, announcing his bid for president, around february, for every 12th, if i remember right. i watched it on tv. my opponent had been long dead, so i thought, that's it. been the phones start ringing again and people are calling me and i'm being asked to come to chicago to assess staff and to evaluate some of the operations. i thought, this sounds pretty good. they are for me a job in management. i thought, this is great. i said there's only one thing i have to do, because something has changed since december 26. i have to go home and talk to my wife and make sure -- this is a family affair, after all. so i talked to my wife, was not pregnant, and we wanted to make sure everything was ok with the baby. so we said we will go to the doctor on march 1 and things are ok, we'll do this. on march 1, we walked out of the doctor's office, the baby's heart was be

thank you to congressman steve seibers for being here. it's great to have rock portman here and thank you for this great vice president. he's going to be terrific, isn't he? [cheers and applause] now, it's good to be back. and you may say, i don't remember seeing you here before, but i was here a long time ago. as a matter of fact, my very first assignment at my first job was to come to lancaster. i'm serious. and to try and do a little work at a little company called anchor hawking. anyone? host: steve in wisconsin. and we are going to move on from steve to thomas in indiana . you're on what is your job situation? caller: my job situation is wonderful. i'm very close to retirement. my wife and i only have so many months of retirement. i've been working just about all my life. i am a baby boomer, so i've seen the ups and downs -- guest: what kind of work do you do? caller: i work for a shipping company. i work for one of the world's largest shipping companies. it was head quartered out in los angeles. we merged with this other large carrier which you all know, a merger back in 1989. so it brought me from chicago to indianapolis which is a strong republican state. and i'm a strong obama person. i work the polls in my district. i'm a democratic judge. but the state of indiana, as i say again, it went blue back in two thorks eight, but right now i don't see that happening again. it was almost a miracle. but one thing about the romney ryan ticket, they stand behind the right to work. and those jobs for right to work are less paying jobs. they may bring more jobs
